What VLT Means for Automotive Window Tint
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of visible light that passes through a glazing system. A lower VLT means a darker finished appearance, but darkness alone does not tell you how well a film manages solar energy, UV transmission or glare.
The finished result depends on both the vehicle’s factory glass and the added film. For that reason, a film’s nominal VLT should be treated as one specification in a wider selection process rather than as a universal legal or performance answer.
Choose Tint by the Driving Requirement
Start with the practical requirement: daylight visibility, night driving, privacy, glare, cabin comfort, appearance and the specific glass position. A driver who spends significant time at night may prioritise higher visible-light transmission, while another driver may prioritise more privacy on rear glazing. The correct choice depends on the vehicle, existing glass and the applicable requirements.
Do Not Use Darkness as a Heat-Rejection Shortcut
A darker film is not automatically the highest-performing solar-control film. Compare documented TSER, VLT, UV performance, reflectivity and construction for the exact film series. TSER is particularly useful because it describes total solar energy rejected under the stated test configuration.

How Factory Glass Changes the Finished Result

Visibility, Privacy and Glare
Lower visible-light transmission generally produces a darker appearance and more visual privacy, but it can also reduce available light through the glass. The choice should preserve appropriate outward visibility for the vehicle and glass position while meeting the customer’s privacy and glare goals.
UV Performance Is Separate from VLT
Visible-light transmission and ultraviolet transmission are different measurements. A lighter-looking automotive film can still provide strong UV filtering when the technical data for that exact film supports it. Check the manufacturer specification instead of assuming that darker automatically means better UV protection.
