What Is 3M Crystalline 40?

3M Crystalline 40 (CR40) is an automotive window film in the 3M Crystalline Series. It uses 3M multilayer optical film technology and a non-metallized construction designed to manage solar energy while preserving signal compatibility.

CR40 should be selected by its documented glazing performance, not by the number “40” alone. Factory automotive glass changes the final installed VLT and solar result.

Why TSER Matters More Than an IR Number Alone

Infrared rejection and total solar energy rejection are different metrics. A high IRR figure does not mean the same percentage of all solar heat is rejected. TSER gives the broader solar-energy result for the tested filmed glass, so compare TSER alongside VLT, UV performance and reflectivity rather than using IRR as a single “heat rejection” score.

How Dark Does CR40 Look?

The final appearance depends on the vehicle’s existing glass, interior colour, exterior lighting and viewing angle. Because factory glass already has its own VLT, the installed result can be darker than the film name suggests. A sample on the actual vehicle is more useful than choosing from the CR40 label alone.

Compare the exact VLT, TSER, UV performance, reflectivity, construction and warranty documentation for the selected product rather than treating one family as universally “better.”

3M describes Crystalline as a metal-free automotive film designed not to interfere with mobile devices, GPS, satellite radio and similar electronic signals. That signal benefit applies to the genuine specified film construction, so the exact installed product should be confirmed on the invoice or product documentation.

Legal and Vehicle-Fit Considerations

CR40 is not automatically compliant or non-compliant based on its name. The combined vehicle glass and film determine the final visible-light transmission. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, vehicle category and glass position, so current requirements should be checked for the specific vehicle before installation.

Installation and Aftercare

Installation quality affects appearance and durability. The glass should be inspected and cleaned thoroughly, the film accurately fitted, and edges finished cleanly. Curing time varies with product, glass and environmental conditions.
