How 3M Ceramic IR Nano-Ceramic Window Film Works
3M Ceramic IR is the nano-ceramic branch of Car Cool’s automotive window film range. Its central purpose is to manage solar heat and infrared energy while keeping a neutral, non-metallized appearance.
The film is offered in several visible-light-transmission levels, so the right option depends on the vehicle, glass position, daytime and night visibility, privacy preference and desired heat control. A darker Ceramic IR film changes visible light and glare more than a lighter version, while the heat-rejection relationship must be read from the exact specification.
Drivers comparing product families can use 3M Crystalline for multilayer optical-film technology, 3M Color Stable for a charcoal colour-stable appearance, and 3M FX-ST for a simpler dyed-film option. For help choosing a shade against your own vehicle glass, see car tinting in Dubai.
Ceramic IR Performance: TSER, Infrared Rejection and VLT
Performance varies by Ceramic IR shade. 3M’s current Ceramic IR brochure lists up to 66% total solar energy rejection (TSER), up to 95% infrared rejection (IRR) and up to 67% infrared energy rejection (IRER) for selected configurations. These are different metrics: IRR is measured across a defined infrared range, while IRER accounts for transmitted and absorbed infrared energy that can be re-radiated into the vehicle.
Lighter Ceramic IR films preserve more visible light, while darker options provide more glare reduction and visual privacy. Compare the exact VLT, TSER, IRR, IRER and glare-reduction values for the film being installed rather than relying on one headline percentage.

UV Protection and Interior Care
3M reports up to 99.9% ultraviolet-light rejection for Ceramic IR, depending on the selected film and glass combination. UV rejection helps reduce exposure through vehicle glass and can help slow fading and deterioration of interior materials. Check the specification for the exact Ceramic IR shade when comparing performance.
Infrared Heat Control and Cabin Comfort
Ceramic IR uses absorptive nano-ceramic technology to reduce infrared energy passing through vehicle glass. In practice, this supports a cooler-feeling cabin surface environment and less direct radiant heat on occupants, especially when the car is exposed to strong sun.
The effect should be described as thermal comfort, not as a guaranteed fuel-saving result. Air-conditioning demand also depends on ambient temperature, vehicle size, insulation, glass area, ventilation and how long the car has been parked.
When choosing a shade, compare TSER, infrared rejection, VLT and glare reduction together. Those values explain more than the label “ceramic tint” by itself.
Non-Metallized Construction and Signal Compatibility
Ceramic IR is non-metallized, so its film construction is designed to avoid the signal-interference issue associated with metallic layers. That is relevant for GPS, mobile connectivity, satellite radio and other in-car electronics.
This should be understood as a material property, not a promise that reception can never drop for unrelated reasons. Network coverage, vehicle hardware, antenna placement and device condition still matter.
Glare Reduction by Ceramic IR Shade
Glare reduction varies by shade and visible-light transmission. Current 3M Ceramic IR specifications show the darkest configurations reaching up to 93% glare reduction, while lighter options preserve more visible light. Select a film that balances glare control with outward visibility for your driving conditions.
3M Ceramic IR Published Performance by Shade
3M publishes Ceramic IR performance for each shade against two test configurations. Auto 75 glass is a factory-tinted automotive glass that already transmits 73 percent of visible light and rejects 42 percent of total solar energy before film. Six millimetre clear glass transmits 89 percent and rejects 19 percent. The finished window is the glass plus the film, so the same shade reads differently on the two configurations.

How to read these columns
- VLT is visible light transmittance through glass and film together. Lower is darker.
- TSER is total solar energy rejected across the whole solar spectrum, which is the figure to compare for heat.
- Glare reduction is measured against the unfilmed glass in the same table, so it follows the shade.
- IRR is infrared rejection over 900 to 1,000 nanometres, the narrow band behind headline infrared claims.
- IRER is infrared energy rejection over 780 to 2,500 nanometres, the full solar infrared range.
Ceramic IR holds IRER between 58 and 67 percent across every shade, and TSER moves only from 66 percent at IR 5 to 51 percent at IR 70 on Auto 75 glass. In other words the nano-ceramic construction carries the heat performance and the shade number mainly changes appearance, privacy and glare. A driver who wants heat rejection without a dark cabin should compare IR 50 or IR 70 against a darker dyed film rather than assume darker means cooler. For the limits that apply to a private vehicle see car window tint law in Dubai, and for the full range comparison see 3M automotive window film.

Three Ceramic IR Myths
Three things drivers often misunderstand about ceramic film.
All ceramic films perform the same
Ceramic is a construction, not a figure. Compare the published infrared and TSER numbers for the exact product: 3M publishes 78 to 95 percent IRR for Ceramic IR.
Ceramic film blocks my phone signal
That is metallised film. Ceramic IR is metal-free, so phones, GPS and keyless entry work normally.
Ceramic IR is as strong as Crystalline
Close at dark shades, but not at light ones. At the lightest shade Ceramic IR 70 rejects 78 percent IRR, while Crystalline CR 90 rejects 95 percent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is 3M Ceramic IR window film?
3M Ceramic IR is a non-metallized automotive window film that uses nano-ceramic technology to manage infrared energy, solar heat, UV exposure and glare. It is available in several VLT levels, so the correct shade depends on the vehicle, glass position and visibility needs.
How much heat does 3M Ceramic IR reject?
Performance varies by shade. Current 3M specifications list up to 66% total solar energy rejection and up to 95% infrared rejection for selected Ceramic IR configurations. Compare the exact VLT, TSER and infrared values for the film being installed.
Does Ceramic IR block UV?
3M reports up to 99.9% UV rejection for the Ceramic IR Series. UV rejection helps reduce one contributor to interior fading and deterioration, but no window film makes a vehicle interior fade-proof.
Will Ceramic IR affect GPS, mobile phones or satellite radio?
Its non-metallized construction is designed not to interfere with common in-car electronics in the way metallic film can. Reception can still be affected by network coverage, vehicle hardware or device condition.
Is Ceramic IR better than Crystalline?
They serve different priorities. Crystalline uses multilayer optical film and is often chosen when premium heat rejection with lighter visible-light options is the priority. Ceramic IR uses nano-ceramic technology and offers a different price/performance balance.
Does Ceramic IR save fuel?
The film can reduce solar heat entering the cabin and improve thermal comfort, but a specific fuel-saving result should not be guaranteed. Air-conditioning demand depends on vehicle size, ambient temperature, insulation, driving conditions and other factors.
Which Ceramic IR shade is best for night driving?
Choose by VLT, outward visibility and glare requirements rather than by darkness alone. Higher-VLT options preserve more visible light, while darker options provide more privacy and glare reduction. Confirm the suitability of the selected VLT for the glass position and current UAE requirements.
How should Ceramic IR be cared for after installation?
Allow the film to cure according to the installer’s instructions. Avoid disturbing the film edges during the curing period and use suitable non-abrasive glass-cleaning methods. Ask for the exact warranty and care guidance supplied with the installed film.
Reflectivity and signal behaviour
3M Ceramic IR is a metal-free nano-ceramic car window film that rejects 78 to 95 percent of infrared in the 900 to 1,000 nm band and 51 to 66 percent of total solar energy on factory-tinted Auto 75 glass. Because it contains no metal, it does not interfere with phone, GPS or key signals. It sits between dyed film and Crystalline on heat and on price.
3M Ceramic IR is a non-metallised construction. That matters twice. Exterior reflectivity stays low, so the glass reads as tinted rather than mirrored from outside, which is the attribute most people actually mean when they say a tint looks cheap. And because there is no metal layer, there is no interference with GPS, mobile data, 5G or satellite radio. Compare reflectivity alongside VLT and TSER rather than judging a film by darkness alone.
What the law allows in Dubai
The UAE permits up to 50 percent tint on the side and rear windows of a private vehicle, and the front windscreen must stay clear unless an exemption has been approved. Because the finished window is the film plus the factory glass already in the car, a shade that measures 50 percent on clear glass can fall below the limit once fitted. This is the practical argument for choosing a higher-performing film at a lighter shade rather than a darker film. See car window tint law in Dubai.
Warranty, documentation and cost
3M warranty terms vary by market, film version, installer and documentation, so confirm the written term for the exact film being fitted and keep the invoice and product details. On price, the drivers are the film series, the number of glass panels, the shape of the glass, whether old film has to come off first, and the warranty attached.
