3M FX-ST 35 is a lighter, more visibility-oriented shade within the FX-ST series. It sits between the darker FX-ST 20 and lighter FX-ST 50, giving drivers a middle ground between privacy, daylight and glare reduction.

Compare shade options: choose FX-ST 20 for more privacy or FX-ST 50 for more visible-light transmission. For technology comparisons, use the automotive window tinting guide.

3M FX-ST 35 is a mid-light automotive window-film shade designed for drivers who want more daylight than FX-ST 20 or FX-ST 5 while still adding glare reduction, UV filtering and solar-control performance. The useful way to assess it is as part of a glazing system: film + factory glass + window position + driver requirements.

What is 3M FX-ST 35?

3M FX-ST 35 is a medium dyed car window film. On Auto 75 factory-tinted glass 3M lists it at 28 percent visible light, 54 percent total solar energy rejected, 63 percent glare reduction and 99.3 percent UV blocking, with 7 percent infrared rejection in the 900 to 1,000 nm band. It gives moderate privacy with a brighter cabin, but on a private car in Dubai it is below the 50 percent limit for side and rear glass, so it needs an approved exemption.

3M describes the FX-ST Series as a non-metallized dyed polyester automotive film with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive and abrasion-resistant coating. It is intended for interior application on automotive glazing, including curved vehicle glass.

That construction matters because film technology affects appearance, signal compatibility, durability, solar performance and price position. FX-ST is a practical automotive range rather than a mirror film, printable graphic vinyl or architectural surface finish.

FX-ST 35 technical performance

On the clear-glass test configuration published by 3M, FX-ST 35 is listed at approximately 33% visible-light transmission (VLT), 37% total solar energy rejected (TSER), 99% UV block and 63% glare reduction. 3M states that these are typical test values and should not be treated as guaranteed results for every installed vehicle.

AttributeWhat it tells youFX-ST 35 example on clear test glass
VLTHow much visible light passes through the glazingAbout 33%
TSERHow much total solar energy the glazing rejectsAbout 37%
UV blockReduction of ultraviolet transmission99%
Glare reductionReduction in visible-light glare compared with the reference glassAbout 63%

The exact installed result changes when the factory glass is different. 3M also publishes a separate example using automotive glass with lower original VLT, where the combined glazing produces a different final VLT and TSER. This is why a film label should never be treated as the final window measurement.

How factory glass changes FX-ST 35

Automotive glass already transmits, reflects and absorbs part of incoming light and solar energy before film is installed. The final window therefore has two optical layers working together.

  • Film VLT affects darkness, but does not equal the final window VLT.
  • Factory-glass VLT changes the combined result.
  • Window position changes the visibility and privacy requirement.
  • Glass colour and construction can alter the appearance of the same film.
  • Current vehicle requirements should be checked against the finished glazing, not guessed from the product name.

FX-ST 35 vs FX-ST 20, 5 and 50

The FX-ST shades form a simple daylight/privacy spectrum. The darker the shade, the lower the visible-light transmission and generally the stronger the glare and privacy effect.

ShadeMain selection reasonMain trade-off
FX-ST 5Very dark privacy-oriented appearanceLowest daylight and strongest visibility trade-off
FX-ST 20Dark privacy with strong glare reductionLess daylight than 35 or 50
FX-ST 35Balanced daylight, glare and moderate privacyLess privacy than darker shades
FX-ST 50Lighter appearance and more outward visibilityLess glare reduction and privacy

Who should consider FX-ST 35?

FX-ST 35 is most relevant when the buyer wants a middle position between a dark privacy tint and a light high-visibility film. It can suit drivers who want useful glare reduction and a tinted appearance without moving to the darkest FX-ST options.

It may be less suitable when the priority is maximum privacy, where darker shades may be preferred, or when the priority is the strongest available solar/infrared performance, where a different 3M film technology may be more appropriate.

FX-ST 35 vs other 3M automotive technologies

Do not assume a darker film automatically rejects more heat than a lighter film from a different technology. Film construction matters. Drivers comparing FX-ST with Color Stable, Ceramic IR or Crystalline should compare documented TSER, infrared-related metrics, VLT, reflectivity, appearance and price for the exact specification.

The broader Automotive Window Tinting hub explains how those film families fit together.

Installation variables that affect the finished result

  1. Inspect the factory glass and any existing film.
  2. Check glass contamination, seals, edges and curved areas.
  3. Measure or assess the existing glazing before selecting a shade.
  4. Prepare and clean the interior glass surface.
  5. Cut and heat-form the film where curved glazing requires it.
  6. Apply and squeegee the film without trapping contamination.
  7. Finish edges carefully around seals and glass boundaries.
  8. Allow the installation to cure before assessing final optical clarity.

Selection summary

FX-ST 35 sits in the middle of the FX-ST shade range. It is a useful choice when moderate privacy and glare reduction are needed without the low daylight of FX-ST 5 or 20. Compare its documented performance on the relevant glass, then confirm the finished-glazing requirements before installation.

3M FX-ST 35 Specifications at a Glance

3M reference data on Auto 75 glass: FX-ST 35 is listed at 28% VLT, 99% UV blocking, 54% TSER, 63% glare reduction, 7% IRR and 54% IRER.

3M reference data on 6 mm clear glass: FX-ST 35 is listed at 33% VLT, 99% UV blocking, 37% TSER, 63% glare reduction, 7% IRR and 24% IRER.

Shade position: FX-ST 35 sits between the darker FX-ST 20 and lighter FX-ST 50. It preserves more visible light than FX-ST 20 while still providing moderate privacy and meaningful glare reduction. Privacy also changes with the lighting inside and outside the vehicle.

The TSER values above come from different 3M reference glass systems, so compare the full film-and-glass condition rather than treating one number as universal. Review FX-ST 20, FX-ST 50 or the FX-ST parent range.

Appearance, reflectivity and signal behaviour

3M FX-ST 35 is dyed polyester with a non-metallised construction. Non-metallised film keeps exterior reflectivity low, so from outside the glass reads as dark rather than mirrored, and it carries none of the signal-interference concern associated with metal-containing films. GPS, mobile data and 5G are unaffected. If low exterior reflectivity matters for the look of the car, this is the attribute to compare, not the shade number.

What the law allows in Dubai

The UAE permits up to 50 percent tint on the side and rear windows of a private vehicle, and the front windscreen must stay clear unless an exemption has been approved. 3M publishes FX-ST 35 at 33 percent visible light transmission over clear glass and 28 percent over factory-tinted automotive glass. Both readings sit below the permitted limit, so on a private car it needs an approved exemption for any side or rear window. The reading is taken on the finished window, which is the film plus the glass already fitted to the car, so a nominal shade number does not by itself prove compliance. Have the installed glass measured before you commit. See car window tint law in Dubai for the limit, the fine and how exemptions work.

Warranty and documentation

3M warranty terms vary by market, film version, installer and documentation. Before installation, confirm the exact film series and shade being fitted, the written warranty term that applies to it, and what that term covers. Keep the invoice and the product documentation supplied with the job. Clear product identification and a proper invoice are stronger trust signals than a general performance claim.

What it costs

Price is driven by the film series, how many glass panels are covered, the shape of the glass, whether old film has to be removed first, and the warranty attached. See what car window tinting costs in Dubai, and car tint removal if the vehicle already has film on it.

Frequently Asked Questions About 3M FX-ST 35

Is FX-ST 35 exactly 35% VLT?

No. 3M’s clear-glass test data lists FX-ST 35 at about 33% VLT, and the final installed window can measure differently because the vehicle’s factory glass contributes its own VLT.

Does FX-ST 35 block UV?

3M technical data lists 99% UV block for FX-ST 35 in the published test configurations. UV performance is a different attribute from visible-light darkness.

Is FX-ST 35 better than FX-ST 20?

Neither is universally better. FX-ST 35 keeps more visible light and outward visibility, while FX-ST 20 is darker and provides a stronger privacy/glare effect. Choose by use case and finished-glazing requirements.

Does FX-ST 35 interfere with GPS or mobile signals?

3M describes the FX-ST Series as non-metallized, so it avoids the metal-layer construction associated with some signal-interference concerns.

How should I check whether FX-ST 35 is suitable for my vehicle?

Check the original glass, window position, required visibility, privacy goal and current vehicle requirements before fitting. The finished glazing is what matters, not the film number alone.
