The glass roof is the largest solar load

On Model 3 and Model Y most of the roof is glass, and the exact layout and treatment vary by model and year. That glass already has factory solar treatment, which varies by model and configuration, so the actual roof glass is checked before any film is recommended. The question is how much a film adds on top of what is already there.

That has to be answered on the actual car. Ask for a reading on the roof glass before and after, rather than accepting a percentage quoted for the film in isolation. A film rated at 95 percent infrared rejection on a reference pane does not deliver a further 95 percent on glass that is already rejecting a large share.

Non-metallized film and vehicle electronics

A Tesla depends on radio and sensor systems for phone-as-key entry, cellular connectivity, GPS, and cameras positioned behind glass. Metal-containing films are the ones historically associated with signal interference. What is documented is the film side of the equation: on Auto 75 glass, 3M Crystalline rejects 95 to 99 percent of infrared in the 900 to 1,000 nanometre band and 46 to 64 percent of total solar energy depending on shade, while a dyed film rejects 7 to 8 percent in the same infrared band.

Choosing a shade for a Tesla in Dubai

The side glass on Model 3 and Model Y is often lighter than the factory privacy glass on many SUVs, which means the film is doing most of the work and the finished reading is closer to the film\u2019s own number. A privately registered Tesla is a private vehicle: the UAE permits up to 50 percent tint on side and rear windows, and the front windscreen must stay clear other than a manufacturer sun strip or an approved exemption. Practical points before booking

• Say whether you want the roof included, since it is priced and assessed separately from the side glass.
