Car Window Tint Law in Dubai and the UAE
Up to 50% tint on side and rear windows, a clear windscreen and how the reading is taken.
The UAE permits up to 50 percent tint on the side and rear windows of a private vehicle. The front windscreen must stay clear unless an exemption has been approved. Exceeding the limit carries a fine of AED 1,500.
Because the finished window is the film plus the glass already fitted to the car, a film’s nominal shade number does not by itself prove the vehicle complies. The measurement that counts is taken on the installed glass.

Taxis and some commercial and heavy vehicles are treated differently from private cars. If the vehicle is not a private car, confirm the rule that applies to its category before booking.
Penalties
Exceeding the permitted tint limit carries a fine of AED 1,500, and police forces across the Emirates issue it under the federal traffic law. Removing non-compliant film afterwards is at the owner’s cost. Confirm the current amount with the issuing authority before assuming a figure, because traffic penalties are revised periodically.
Exemptions
Darker tint can be approved in specific circumstances, including documented medical grounds. An exemption is granted by the relevant authority in advance and is tied to the vehicle. An installer cannot grant one, and no installer should fit film beyond the limit on the expectation that an exemption will follow.
How to stay compliant
- Measure the existing glass first. At Car Cool this is done with a light transmission meter before any film is cut, and again after fitting. Factory glass already blocks light. The same film produces a different final reading on clear glass than on factory-tinted glass.
- Choose the film by measured result, not by name. 3M publishes FX-ST 35 at 33 percent visible light transmission over clear glass and 28 percent over factory-tinted automotive glass. The film did not change; the glass did.
- Keep the documentation. Retain the invoice and the product details for the exact film series and shade installed.
- Re-check after any glass replacement. A replacement pane can have different factory properties from the original.

The 50 Percent Rule, and Why Other Numbers Circulate
A privately registered vehicle in the UAE may carry up to 50 percent tint on the side and rear windows. That means at least 50 percent of visible light must still pass through the finished window. The front windscreen cannot be tinted, other than a factory sun strip along the top edge. Exceeding the limit carries a AED 1,500 fine. Darker tint is possible only with prior authorisation.
Why you will find three different numbers online
Search for this and you will be told 30 percent, 50 percent and 70 percent by three different pages. All three numbers are real; two of them are out of date or describe something else.

The rule sits in the federal traffic law and was reported by Khaleej Times in 2017 as Circular No. 86 and Article No. 9 of the traffic law, and it is enforced by the police in each emirate. Tint percentage is light transmitted, not light blocked
This is the second source of confusion. The figure is visible light transmission: a 30 percent window transmits 30 percent of visible light and a 50 percent window transmits 50 percent, so 30 percent is the darker of the two. Lower number, darker glass. A car described as having 30 percent tint is therefore below the UAE limit, not comfortably inside it.
The reading is taken on the window, not on the film
A film sold as 50 percent does not produce a 50 percent window. The measurement is made on the finished glass, which is the factory glass and the film together. 3M publishes film performance against Auto 75 automotive glass, which transmits 73 percent of visible light on its own, and against 6 mm clear glass at 89 percent. A vehicle with factory privacy glass in the rear starts darker again.
The practical consequence is that the same film is compliant on one car and not on another. Ask for the measured reading on your own vehicle after installation, and keep it with the invoice.

Taxis and trucks are treated separately from private vehicles, and commercial and heavy vehicle categories carry their own requirements. If the vehicle is not a privately registered car, confirm the rule for its category before booking rather than applying the private-car figure to it.
Exemptions
Darker tint can be approved, and the approval is issued for the vehicle by the authorities rather than granted by an installer. Authorisation is obtained before the film is fitted, not afterwards, and the documentation belongs in the vehicle. An installer who offers to fit darker film without that approval in place is offering you the fine.

Not necessarily. Heat rejection is measured as total solar energy rejected, and it depends on the film construction rather than its darkness. 3M Crystalline CR 70 transmits 70 percent of visible light and still rejects a documented share of solar energy. Compare TSER, not shade.
Does the limit apply to a car brought in from another country?
Yes. Film applied abroad still has to meet the UAE limit once the vehicle is registered and driven here. Have existing film measured rather than assumed.

Is 30 percent tint darker than 50 percent?
Yes. The number is visible light transmission, so it describes light getting through rather than light blocked. A 30 percent window transmits 30 percent of visible light and a 50 percent window transmits 50 percent, which makes 30 percent darker. In the UAE, 50 percent is the lowest transmission permitted on side and rear glass of a private car, so a finished 30 percent window is below the legal limit.
Why do different websites give different tint limits for Dubai?
Because the limit changed in 2017. It was previously 30 percent tint, meaning 70 percent light transmission, and it was raised to 50 percent in recognition of UAE summer conditions. Pages quoting 30 percent are repeating the old rule, and pages quoting a 70 percent windscreen allowance are describing a different jurisdiction entirely.
What law sets the tint limit in the UAE?
