Why film fails in this climate

Window film does not usually fail because it was fitted badly. It fails because of what heat does to the two materials in it over years: the adhesive that bonds it to the glass, and the dye or construction that gives it its colour.

  • Bubbling is adhesive breakdown. The bond releases in patches and air or moisture collects under them. Bubbles do not settle back down and they get worse, because each one becomes a spot where heat is trapped against the adhesive.
  • Purpling is dye failure in lower-grade dyed film. The dyes that make it grey break down under ultraviolet at different rates, and the one left standing is purple. It is cosmetic, permanent, and it is the clearest visual signature of a cheap film.
  • Edge lift starts where the film meets trim, seals or the top edge of a dropped window, because that is where moisture and cleaning chemicals get in.
  • Hazing and delamination in multi-layer films, where the layers separate and light scatters. This is the one that matters most at night.

None of these are repairable. Once any of them starts, the film is at the end of its life and the only question is when it comes off.

Why the adhesive is the real job

Lifting the film is the easy half. Heat softens it and it peels, sometimes in one sheet. What it leaves behind is a layer of aged pressure-sensitive adhesive that has been baking against the glass for years, and that has to be dissolved and worked off rather than scraped.

Adhesive left behind is not cosmetic. New film bonds to whatever is on the glass, so residue shows as haze, as points where the new film will not sit flat, and as early failure of the replacement. A removal that stops at the film layer has done about 40 percent of the work.

Rear windscreen defroster lines

The rear glass is the one piece where removal technique is not a matter of preference. Defroster elements are printed onto the inside surface of the glass and the film sits directly on top of them. A blade or an aggressive scrape lifts a line, the circuit breaks, and the only repair is replacing the glass.

Rear windscreens are therefore removed with heat and adhesive softeners, worked in the direction of the lines rather than across them, and checked afterwards. If a defroster line is already broken before work starts, say so, so it is recorded before rather than discovered after.

Why layering new film over old does not work

Three reasons, and the third is the one people miss.

  1. The new adhesive bonds to an aged film surface rather than to glass, so the bond is weaker and fails sooner.
  2. Any defect in the old film, a bubble, a crease, a lifted edge, telegraphs through and is now permanent.

What changes how long removal takes

  • Age. Older adhesive is harder and takes longer.
  • Film type. Metallised and multi-layer films tend to tear into strips rather than lift as a sheet.
  • Glass position. Rear windscreens take the longest because of the defroster lines and the curvature.
  • Condition. Film that is already bubbled or delaminated comes off in fragments.

Choosing the replacement

If the old film bubbled or turned purple, that was a dyed film reaching the end of its service life. The relevant question for the replacement is not which shade to repeat but which construction to move to. When film needs to come off
